Planning Rooftop Solar? Check Transformer Capacity Online First

Planning solar for your home or business involves more than choosing panels and an inverter. Before committing to a grid-connected system, it is sensible to understand the connection options at your property.

According to Newswire’s report dated 5 November 2026, Electricity Distribution Lanka (Pvt) Ltd (EDL) has introduced an online facility to check available transformer capacity for rooftop solar before submitting an application. The report says coverage currently extends to transformers fitted with meters, with further metering work underway.

How to use the information when planning your project

Start with the official link above. Follow the instructions displayed on the portal, and confirm which transformer serves your electricity connection with your electricity provider if you are unsure. The closest transformer by distance should not be assumed to be the one supplying your property.

If a result is available, keep a dated copy for your discussion with the electricity provider and your solar installer. Use it as an early planning reference when discussing the proposed system size and the next application steps.

If your transformer is not listed or the information is unclear, ask the relevant electricity office for guidance. Missing information should not be interpreted as confirmation that solar is either permitted or unavailable. LECO customers should confirm the applicable process directly with LECO rather than assume this EDL facility covers their connection.

Does an online result mean your solar system is approved?

Treat the capacity check as an initial reference, rather than permission to install or connect. PUCSL’s published rooftop solar framework identifies distribution licensees as responsible for processing applications, granting grid connections and ensuring technical compliance.

Before purchasing equipment or agreeing to an installation date, confirm the required application, technical assessment and written clearance with your electricity provider. Ask which system capacity and connection arrangement are acceptable for your particular premises.

Do not assume that selecting a Hybrid inverter, adding a Battery or proposing Zero Export automatically removes any approval requirements. Confirm the proposed arrangement before proceeding.

A practical next step

For a useful initial discussion, have your recent electricity bill, property location, daytime electricity usage and any backup requirements ready. Ask your installer to explain how these needs affect the proposed design, alongside the electricity provider’s connection requirements.
